Distracted driving, next to speeding and driving under the influence, is a leading cause of car accidents in the U.S. The rates of distracted driving remain high. There are three main types of distracted driving that cause traffic accidents in Arkansas.
Taking your eyes off the road
The most common type of distraction that causes motor vehicle accidents is taking your eyes off of the road. The risks of crashing increase when drivers look away for longer than three seconds. On a crowded road, it takes a few seconds of distraction for the driver to make a mistake and crash.
Taking your hands off the wheel
The second type of distraction is driving with one hand or with no hands. One hand is trying to hold a cell phone or drink while only one hand is on the steering wheel. Texting, changing the radio station and eating food are common reasons why drivers remove their hands.
Taking your mind off driving
Most drivers have thought of many other topics while driving; however, they remain focused on driving. The drivers who crash have ignored the main rules of the road and become disinterested in driving. They don’t notice when a traffic light changes or forget to check the blind spot when changing lanes. Drivers must think about driving itself at all times to remain safe.
There are dozens of ways that drivers are distracted visually, mentally and physically. Taking your eyes off of the road is the most common distraction that leads to an accident. Not using your hands properly and forgetting about driving itself are additional reasons.
